   I am the fuckin' Blanche Duboise of angry, aging, prima donna chefs.The people I work with have to tell me I'm pretty every five minutes just so I'll keep  showing  up every day, and I'm a guy.I am riding out my career on a streetcar named "Go Fuck Yourself "all the way to the hell where chefs are skinned alive and boiled in their own shitty hospital food.I, too , am dependent on the"kindness of strangers".Lucky for me I am the chef at an insane asylum and nobody is stranger than my current customer base.Except maybe the hospital staff.Sometimes I get stuck behind their bedraggledassedness slow-walkin' themselves down to the room where they go to not cure somebody for ten years. No sense of urgency there,"Hey bitch hurry up or my shitty food is not gonna be really over-cooked in time for lunch".These people used to have souls.I can see it in their eyes.The pernicious nature of their chosen profession has damaged them down to the bone structure.They were young once, but now they're thirty, maybe thirty two .It's fuckin' over.      The self proclaimed super-patriots in this country have succeeded in instilling a palpable sense of fear in those of us who have consciously decided not to bring firearms into our lives.  There is a price to be paid for fear-mongering.

Here's the thing; We fought the civil war once.It wasn't a states rights issue it was about slavery and preservation of this country. Secessionist, racists lost that war. It was fought again in the 1950s and 60s. It was not about states rights or business owners rights .It was about equal access by people of color to voting rights, education, and public transportation.The status quot preservationists lost .They lost in the courts, in the streets, and in the hearts and minds of most Americans.The paranoia surrounding changing demographics in America is being fed by autocratic southern conservatives and religious leaders who know how to exploit the divisive nature of  fear. These people will use the working class to divide the country by demonizing the poor, immigrants, people of color, non- christians and ,well,  Democrats.The N.R.A.identifies strongly with the conservative christians and actively encourages armed resistance to government over- reach.Forget the obvious irony of well-armed christians. Outrageous hypocrisy now passes as passionately held principle.Their pernicious influence on local gun laws is breathtaking. Those of us who want to be safe from gun violence have lost the right to restrict ,or even object to the unrestricted flow of firearms into mainstream society.

  There are growing numbers of frustrated liberal Americans who are increasingly fearful.They are not weak, stupid, cowardly, or altogether passive. They are however, human and having lost the rhetorical battle they may be moved to violence .If you think modern Americans can't make the disastrous mistake of fighting another civil war ,think again.The modern world is rife with conflicts that have been fought for the same reasons over and again for a thousand years.People forget .Recent events demonstrate that we have forgotten some painful lessons.

  Imagine this scenario in urban Grand Rapids .A mom, let's  a person of color,homeless ,demands to receive shelter in the firehouse near the expressway underpass where she currently resides with her four children She moves into  a bunk not  being used by the firemen..A group of armed,  inner city homeless advocates appear to prevent her removal.BOOM! In fifteen minutes it would all be over : dead mom, dead kids ,dead activists, dead firemen, arrests, hand-wringing : why .why.......oh the humanity.....Horseshit...Cowshit!
 
  In the late sixties when Black Panthers and other leftist groups began to arm themselves we saw game changing ,restrictive, gun legislation.Now we celebrate racist, baccy stained ,one toothed ,desert ape assholes that point guns at  federal agents.America: land of the well-armed shit shoveler.

RELIGION-THE FIRST AND WORST FORM OF GOVERNMENT

  The concept of religion is the echo of a cry for relief.It travels out into the landscape of our lives and returns.  .It is changed,  but still vaguely recognizable.We listen , we hope, we worship the refracted message as divine. It is given meaning, mystique, tailored, and labored over for thousands of years.We build a construct for living.We imbue it with absolute truth .We own it and it becomes inviolate.

I believe  sentient humans are responsible for the invention, application, and on-going evolution of religion.  It makes sense that we seek guarantees in a life so often cruel,and unrelenting.The process of isolating the principles necessary to create an ordered society is a noble ,on going enterprise.How do we apply these tenants without engaging in the ultimate tyranny? There is no more oppressive form of government than absolute power over  mind , body, and will.The invitation to put reason aside in service to the shaman currently in fashion shouldn't have a place in the realm of law and social order.

When we attempt to govern it seems wise to remove parishional ,denominational absolutes from the discussion.We should then agree upon principles that allow for pragmatic discourse between reasonable actors.This experiment has gone on for thousands of years. Multi-cultural societies function best when the passions inspired by the most strident religious practitioners are set aside.

For the better part of two decades American political discourse has attempted to keep time to some mythical, puritanical hymn book. White Christian America wants its country back.If memory serves that country would probably be England.Fundamentalism renders its practitioners blind to reason.Religious fanaticism divides countries, families ,even denominations. These divisions are often based on nebulous  interpretations of ancient text that can never be authenticated. Still we commit murder and willingly die defending these ethereal notions.What could be more dangerous?  


Faith  is a potent device for control..Control of the troubled self; control of great numbers of people.Resourceful, ambitious people have employed spirituality as a device for driving the human herd throughout history.The trick is this; that which cannot be proven wrong,  can [ by the charismatic]  claim to be irrefutably right -untouchable.

Taxation is a concept not unlike tithing .A chicken and egg debate may ensue. It used to be easy to see what yours tax dollars financed: roads, drones, battleships ,trash pick-up.These days we are probably financing. some charleton pretending to be drunk on the blessed baby to pimp for prayer in schools. If you want prayer in schools put an extra ten thousand in the collection box, build your own school and pray all goddam day in it. Don't make me pay for it .You don't have the right to do that.That's really all I really meant to say.

P.S.        If I ever felt compelled to murder because someone close to me was made to suffer, I would be a murderer: a cold blooded seeker of vengeance.If I was moved by religious fervor or nationalism I could be called a zealot or a super patriot.Motivation to shed blood should be pure ,and come from a place near and dear to your heart.Good thing I'm primarily a pacifist.....with reservations.
