Dennis Miller is a man with an impressive command of the English language.He can make it dance.He is also fanatically engaged in the sneering, pathological pursuit of the new brand of elitist , right wing assault on- well , almost everything.Everything that doesn't wreak of money ,militarism ,the continued disparity of income ,and general furtherance of the inhumanity of man.IF EVERYONE IN AMERICA WERE MUSSOLINI THIS GUY WOULD SELL OUT EVERY SHOW.
His new role as Fox News funny guy with a cranium would have the viewership in stitches- if they knew what half of the words meant.He seems to be horsewhipping the prose to make it keep time to his water-torture delivery of one measured , poisonous barb , after another.It never really feels like comedy to me .On some intellectual plane it is clever, even artful ,but the tone is unsettling.It may just be that comedy in the service of wealth , militarism , and nationalism is a moral and intellectual contradiction.The genius of the composition compels me to recognize it , but not to laugh.
That is not , I hope , a function of my own prejudice.
I grew up believing that working stiffs have a right to laugh at rich people.It is all we have to get us over the fact that we aren't one of them. We know rich people laugh at us for not being rich , but they should do it at the club ,or the spa ,or in a booth at Club 21.They use to follow the rule.Rule says :If you're really wealthy ,I mean great -grand kids- may- have- downs- syndrome- but- will -still- graduate- Harvard wealthy , then shut the fuck up . There are more of us than there are of you and if we get hungry enough we will find a way to kill you and eat you.You don't employ a despotic comic genius to use words your base doesn't even understand while making jokes about how contemptible it is to want to make the world a better place.Especially a guy who can write better than most of us . Description of the human condition is a time -honored refuge of the working class . We now have no choice but to write cookbooks."
